Wrestler hospitalized after being disqualified from Olympic final over strict rule
Indian wrestler Vinesh Phogat was disqualified from the finals of the women’s 50kg freestyle category at the 2024 Paris Olympics and was subsequently hospitalized. The disqualification occurred on August 7, just before Phogat was set to compete against the US’ Sarah Hildebrandt in the final match.
Reason for Disqualification
Phogat, who had previously competed in the 53kg category in the past two Olympic Games, made significant efforts to qualify for the 50kg weight class. Despite beating defending Olympic champion Yui Susaki from Japan and Cuba’s Yusneylis Guzman Lopez to reach the finals, she faced a setback during the weigh-in on the morning of the finals.
Team India released a statement on Twitter explaining the situation: “It is with regret that the Indian contingent shares news of the disqualification of Vinesh Phogat from the Women’s Wrestling 50kg class. Despite the best efforts by the team through the night, she weighed in a few grams over 50kg this morning.”
Attempts to Make Weight
In preparation for the Olympics, Phogat adhered to a rigorous weight-cutting regimen, which included spending extended periods in the sauna and following a strict diet. Indian women’s chief coach Virender Dahiya mentioned that Phogat’s weight was “up by 1kg” the night before the finals. Despite efforts by Phogat and her support team to reduce her weight, it remained slightly above the limit.
The Times of India reported that Phogat even resorted to cutting her hair and attempting to draw blood to meet the weight requirement. After the disqualification, it was revealed that Phogat had fainted and was hospitalized, with dehydration suspected as the cause of her collapse.

Current Condition and Support
Phogat is now stable and recovering at the Olympic Village’s polyclinic. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his support for Phogat on Twitter, acknowledging her resilience and dedication. Modi wrote: “Vinesh, you are a champion among champions! You are India’s pride and an inspiration for each and every Indian. Today’s setback hurts. I wish words could express the sense of despair that I am experiencing. At the same time, I know that you epitomize resilience. It has always been your nature to take challenges head on. Come back stronger! We are all rooting for you.”
Appeal and Advice
Phogat has appealed her disqualification to the Court of Arbitration for Sports (CAS), seeking to be awarded joint silver. This situation underscores the importance of prioritizing health and well-being, especially when engaging in extreme weight-cutting practices.
For athletes and individuals alike, it’s crucial to adopt methods that safeguard one’s health and avoid harm while striving for performance goals.
