An early season winter storm has brought rain and snow to New Mexico, with a stronger storm system set to arrive starting Wednesday, bringing even more precipitation.

On Monday, a powerful storm system moved across New Mexico, delivering snow levels as low as 5,500 feet in central and northern regions. The Sangre de Cristo Mountains have received over 12 inches of snow, with snow reaching Albuquerque’s Northeast Heights. As the storm continues to move eastward, rain and snow will taper off from west to east through late tonight, with the final precipitation expected to end by midnight in northeast New Mexico. Many areas have experienced a significant drop in temperatures today, leading to very cold conditions expected Tuesday morning.

A brief period of drier weather is anticipated for Election Day on Tuesday. Although it will be a chilly morning with high temperatures remaining below normal in the afternoon, the day will be mostly sunny and calm across the state. However, rain and snow will begin to push into northwest New Mexico and southwest Colorado as the next storm system approaches.

A major winter storm will start to impact New Mexico on Wednesday. A strong cold front moving in from the northwest will quickly lower temperatures and bring snow levels down to valley floors. Concurrently, a backdoor cold front from the northeast will also contribute to the drop in temperatures. Rain and snow are expected to spread across the state Wednesday night, with accumulating snowfall continuing into Thursday. Significant travel impacts are likely throughout the northern half of New Mexico, with gusty winds potentially causing blowing snow and blizzard conditions in some areas. These impacts are expected to persist into Friday before the storm moves out of the state Friday night.

As details of the storm continue to evolve, updates will be provided regarding the timing and impacts. What is certain is that parts of the state will experience significant effects from this storm beginning as early as Wednesday night.

Drier air is forecast to move in over the weekend, and temperatures will gradually warm up starting Saturday, though cooler weather is likely to linger.
