Why Was Sha’Carri Richardson Disqualified from the Olympics in Tokyo?
The track and field sprinter won the 100-meter sprint at the U.S. Olympic Trials in only 10.86 seconds, earning her a spot in the Tokyo Olympics in June 2021. Sha’Carri couldn’t stay happy for long, though, as her dreams of competing in the Olympics were dashed when it was discovered that she had used cannabis.
In July 2021, Sha’Carri received a one-month penalty from the United States Anti-Doping Agency after she acknowledged smoking cannabis. Two days before the women’s 100m event at the Tokyo Olympics was about to take place, her suspension was removed. However, due of the circumstances, her Olympic qualifying results were void, therefore she was unable to compete.

Sha’Carri Richardson was suspended from the Tokyo Olympics. What did she say?
In an interview on July 2, 2021, Sha’Carri acknowledged her drug use and stated she wants “to take responsibility for [her] actions.” “I am aware of what I did and what I should have done. and I still decided to make that choice,” she remarked at the time.
In an interview conducted before to the trials, the athlete revealed that she had smoked marijuana as a coping mechanism for the death of her biological mother.

In an interview with the Today show in August 2021, she continued to think about the circumstances. Sha’Carri remarked, “It was a bittersweet moment because it just gives me more time to show the world that I’m here to stay. It was sweet.” “Watching it made me want to push forward and just grow from that, but it also just guarantees that I’m going to be here a little bit longer in the game.”

Richardson Sha’Carri brought back for the Olympics in 2024
When Sha’Carri was finally allowed to compete, it was in the Paris Olympics of 2024, when she placed second in the women’s 100-meter final.
The Texan spoke candidly about her preparation for the Olympics in an interview with Vogue before they started.
When asked how she was going into each race, she responded, “It’s like chess.” “Every action you take is bringing about a checkmate. That’s checkmate; the Olympics are the event that sportsmen dream of. However, every race I have before that counts too because it gives me the chance to improve and by the time I’m on the track in Paris, I’ll have already made my mistakes.
Sha’Carri went on to say that she was attempting to keep her attention in the here and now so as to avoid becoming consumed by the pressures of the Olympics. “Because I can’t be where I need to be if all I do is look forward.” which is right now here,” she said.
