According to THE SUN, Supplemental Security Income (SSI) recipients should be aware that there will be no regular SSI payments distributed in September due to a scheduling anomaly. The maximum monthly benefit for 2024 is $943 for individuals and $1,415 for couples, as set by the Social Security Administration (SSA).

Since September 1 fell on a Sunday this year, the payment for September was issued on Friday, August 30. As a result, SSI beneficiaries will not receive a payment in September according to the SSA’s payment calendar. The next SSI payment will be issued on October 1.

Despite this, SSI recipients will not miss out on any funds, as they received two payments in August—one on August 1 and another on August 30. This situation mirrors what happened earlier in the year: in June, payments were made on Friday, May 31, rather than Saturday, June 1. Recipients had to wait until Monday, July 1, for their next payment.

The same scheduling issue will occur again in November, when recipients will receive two payments—one on November 1 and another on November 29.

Understanding SSI Payment Schedules

SSI payments are typically made on the first day of each month unless disrupted by a weekend or holiday. SSI benefits are designed for adults and children with disabilities or blindness who have limited income and resources, as well as for individuals aged 65 and older who meet financial qualifications. It’s important to distinguish SSI payments from Social Security retirement benefits.

Social Security retirement benefits are distributed based on the recipient’s birth date. Payments are made on three Wednesdays each month:

  • If your birth date falls between the 1st and 10th, payment is made on the second Wednesday of the month.
  • If your birth date is between the 11th and 20th, payment is made on the third Wednesday.
  • If your birth date falls between the 21st and 31st, payment is made on the fourth Wednesday.

Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) payments follow a similar schedule.

Other Direct Payments and Assistance Programs

In related news, recent direct payments have benefitted many Americans. Last month, families received a $500 payment as part of a broader program, totaling $9,000 in payments over several months.

California residents within specific zip codes may also benefit from the Long Beach Pledge Guaranteed Income Pilot, which was expanded in January. For more information on these and other direct payment programs, visit the U.S. Sun.
