WAITING FOR PAYDAY: Millions of Americans won’t see $1,415 checks for entire month – but there’s a reason you won’t miss out

According to THE SUN, Supplemental Security Income (SSI) recipients should be aware that there will be no checks distributed in September due to a scheduling anomaly.

Payment Schedule Changes

The maximum monthly SSI benefit for an individual in 2024 is $943, and $1,415 for couples, provided both qualify, according to the Social Security Administration (SSA). However, because September 1 fell on a Sunday this year, the payment intended for September was issued on Friday, August 30 instead.

As a result, beneficiaries will not receive a payment in September. The next SSI payment will be on October 1. This scheduling adjustment means that recipients will have received two payments in August—one on the 1st and another on the 30th.

Past and Future Payment Adjustments

A similar situation occurred earlier this year when June payments were distributed on Friday, May 31, instead of Saturday, June 1. Those who did not receive a payment in June had to wait until Monday, July 1 for their next check.

Looking ahead, a similar adjustment will occur in November, with payments scheduled for both November 1 and November 29.

Understanding SSI Payment Timing

SSI payments are typically made on the first of each month, but this schedule can be affected by weekends or holidays.

SSI Recipients vs. Social Security Benefits

It’s important to distinguish between SSI payments and Social Security retirement benefits. SSI payments are intended for adults and children with disabilities or blindness who have limited income and resources, as well as individuals aged 65 and older who meet financial criteria.

Social Security retirement benefits, on the other hand, are distributed based on the recipient’s birth date. Payments are made on three Wednesdays each month:

  • If your birth date falls between the 1st and 10th, payments are made on the second Wednesday of each month.
  • If your birth date is between the 11th and 20th, payments are made on the third Wednesday.
  • If your birth date is between the 21st and 31st, payments are made on the fourth Wednesday.

Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) recipients generally follow the same schedule.

Additional Payment Opportunities

For more information on direct payments, the U.S. Sun provides details on recent initiatives, such as a $500 payment to families, totaling $9,000 over several months. Additionally, California residents within specific zip codes may benefit from the expanded Long Beach Pledge Guaranteed Income Pilot, which began in January.
