World War I, often referred to as “The Great War,” officially ended on June 28, 1919, with the signing of the Treaty of Versailles. However, hostilities ceased earlier, on November 11, 1918, when an armistice was signed between the Allied nations and Germany. This armistice, which went into effect at the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month, marked the end of what was then known as “the war to end all wars.”

Veterans Day continues to be observed on November 11 each year, regardless of which day of the week it falls on. This date holds historical significance, not only marking the end of World War I but also providing an opportunity to honor America’s veterans for their patriotism, sacrifice, and love of country.

In Alamogordo, Veterans Day weekend was filled with events that brought the community together to honor local veterans. The celebrations began on Saturday with a parade down 10th Street, where citizens lined the route to watch floats, nonprofit organizations, students, businesses, and military members march in tribute to veterans. Later in the day, the first annual Sounds of Freedom event took place at Alameda Park. The event featured live musical performances, food trucks, craft vendors, and children’s activities, culminating in a spectacular drone show.

On Monday, Veterans Day itself, the mayor of Tularosa and other local officials gathered at the Tularosa Veterans Memorial Park for the town’s annual observance. The ceremony began at 11 a.m. and was attended by local veterans and members of the American Legion Riders organization. The gathering served as a reminder of the service and sacrifice of veterans and active-duty military personnel.

To all veterans and those currently serving, we salute you for your dedication and sacrifice!
