University of New Mexico Reports Shift in Popular Major Choices
The University of New Mexico has observed notable changes in students’ major choices over the past five years as they approach graduation.
While many students initially pursue degrees in fields such as science or art, recent trends indicate a shift in focus. According to the College of Education and Human Sciences, approximately 300 students each year are switching their majors to education.
Since 2019, more than 1,500 students have opted for a teaching licensure bachelor’s degree at UNM. In 2022 and 2023, graduates from the university represented 33 percent of the teaching workforce in New Mexico.
