“Turtle Safety Alert: New Mexico Game and Fish Advises Caution on Roads”
NEW MEXICO (KRQE) – The New Mexico Department of Game and Fish is issuing a reminder to motorists to watch out for slow-moving turtles, especially during rainy conditions. Desert box turtles, emerging from hibernation, are becoming more active and are frequently seen crossing roads in search of new habitats and nesting sites.
The department advises drivers to stop and assist these turtles in crossing the road safely. However, they also emphasize that it is illegal to collect and sell wild turtles, so please refrain from taking them home.
