According to The Sun, General Motors (GM) car owners may have the opportunity to receive a payment of up to $12,700 as part of a $35 million settlement related to claims about faulty diesel engines in certain Chevrolet and GMC trucks.

Lawsuit Overview

The lawsuit was filed against GM, alleging that 2011-2016 Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra trucks equipped with the Duramax diesel 6.6L V8 LML engine contained a defective high-pressure fuel pump known as the CP4. This pump, which is crucial for pressurizing diesel fuel to the engine, was described in the suit as “unreasonably fragile and susceptible to catastrophic failure.”

Settlement Agreement

In an effort to avoid the “costs, risk, and delays associated with further litigation,” GM has agreed to a settlement of $35 million, although the company has denied any wrongdoing in the matter.

Who is Eligible for Compensation?

If you own a 2011-2016 Chevrolet Silverado or GMC Sierra truck with the Duramax diesel 6.6L V8 engine, you may be entitled to part of the settlement, provided you meet certain criteria:

  • The vehicle must have been purchased from a General Motors authorized dealer in one of the following states: California, Florida, Illinois, Iowa, New York, Pennsylvania, or Texas.
  • The purchase must have occurred between March 1, 2020, and September 13, 2024.

Expected Settlement Payments

The estimated settlement payments will range from $400 to $12,700, divided into three groups based on the type of claim:

  1. Out-of-Pocket Repairs: Owners who paid for CP4 repairs not covered by warranty will receive a portion of at least $30 million set aside for this group, with payments ranging from $6,356 to $12,712.
  2. Previous Owners: Those who no longer own the trucks or sold them without incurring out-of-pocket repair costs can expect payments from at least $5 million allocated for this group, with amounts ranging from $400 to $800.
  3. Current Owners: Drivers who still own the affected trucks but have not made repairs will be reimbursed for future repairs, receiving 50% of the costs paid for CP4 repairs made at a GM-authorized dealership after the settlement receives final approval. Reimbursement will end 12 months after final approval or when the truck reaches 200,000 miles.

Important Dates

The court is scheduled to hold a final approval hearing on January 21, 2025. The deadline for filing claims will be six months after the court’s final approval, expected around July 21, 2025.

Chevrolet and GMC owners unsure of their eligibility can use a VIN lookup search bar available on the litigation website.
