Trial dates have been set for two individuals accused of abusing a developmentally disabled woman, leading to her death.

According to investigators, Angelita Chacon, the woman’s primary caretaker, and her girlfriend, Patricia Hurtado, transported the 38-year-old woman from Rio Rancho to the Mexico border. Border agents searching their van discovered the woman unresponsive on the floor.

Court documents revealed that the woman had severe sores, bruises, and two deep leg wounds that exposed bone. Investigators suspect Chacon intended to take the woman to Mexico for medical treatment to avoid detection by social services.

New Mexico Attorney General Raúl Torrez described the woman’s injuries as “nothing short of torture.”

Chacon and Hurtado are now scheduled to face trial in September of next year on charges of neglect, abuse, and false imprisonment.
