According to The Sun, The deadline is rapidly approaching for Americans to claim their share of a $115 million settlement related to privacy concerns. This comes after a class action lawsuit was filed against Oracle America, Inc. in California in 2023, alleging the company illegally collected personal information and sold it to third parties for advertising purposes.
Allegations Against Oracle
The lawsuit claims that Oracle improperly captured, compiled, and sold individuals’ online and offline data to third parties without obtaining their consent. This included sensitive information such as web activity, online purchases, geolocation, and other personal data. Oracle collaborates with notable companies like Uber, AMC, and MGM Resorts. While the company has agreed to the settlement, it does not admit any wrongdoing.
Compensation Details
Claimants in this lawsuit will receive an equal share of the settlement fund, though the exact amount each person will receive is not yet known. This is because the total payout will depend on the number of eligible claims submitted. In addition to monetary compensation, Oracle has agreed to revise its operations to enhance privacy protections. This includes reviewing its privacy systems and ceasing the collection of user information from forms and referring websites on its own platform.
Eligible claimants are those whose personal information was collected and/or sold by Oracle since August 19, 2018. The data in question may have been shared through Oracle’s ID Graph, Data Marketplace, or other advertising products used after that date.
Claim Submission Deadline
Individuals interested in claiming their share of the settlement have just four days left to file a claim. To do so, they should visit the settlement website, where they will find a portal to submit their claim form.
Key Dates to Remember
- Final Date to Submit Claims: October 17
- Deadline to Object or Exclude Themselves: October 17
Those who choose to exclude themselves from the settlement will not receive any money but will retain the right to sue Oracle regarding the same issues in the future. Conversely, eligible claimants who fail to take action will forfeit their legal rights and any potential compensation.
A final approval hearing is set for November 14, during which a judge will review the settlement terms and determine the payout for each claimant after various deductions.
Other Settlement Opportunities
In related news, thousands of Americans are also eligible for a portion of a $29.5 million settlement involving Citibank. Each claimant could receive up to $850 if they were impacted by calls regarding credit card balances between August 15, 2014, and July 31, 2024. As with the Oracle case, the deadline for Citibank customers to take action is fast approaching.
