Tijeras Vigil Pays Tribute to Breille Mestre and Her Parents After Tragic Loss
A grieving community came together to honor the memory of 17-year-old Breille Mestre and her parents, Bertha and Raymundo, who were tragically murdered in Tijeras just weeks ago. The Carrie Tingley Hospital Foundation hosted a heartfelt candlelight vigil and balloon release at Mariposa Basin Park, celebrating Breille’s bright spirit and kind heart.
“She was an amazing young woman. I wish everyone could have experienced her light,” reflected Kerry Trautwein, a volunteer with the foundation.
Breille’s brother is currently accused of fatally shooting the family, along with their dog. A dedicated member of the Carrie Tingley Hospital Foundation, Breille had actively participated in programs such as adaptive cycling and wheelchair basketball for over a decade.
A cycling volunteer recounted a touching moment with Breille during one of their rides. “I noticed a turtle in the bike path, and as I stopped, she did too. She knew exactly what to do—she picked up the turtle and moved it to the ditch so it could get to the water,” they shared, highlighting Breille’s compassionate nature.
Though her time was short, Breille’s impact was profound. “I was heartbroken to hear about this tragedy, but I’m grateful to be here to honor her memory. She will be deeply missed,” Trautwein added.
The vigil included the release of balloons, the lighting of candles, and the establishment of a scholarship in Breille’s name, aiming to honor her legacy. “The scholarship funds we’ve set up will help children and their families participate in the adaptive programs our foundation offers,” explained Liliana Prado-Bujanda, Executive Director of the Carrie Tingley Hospital Foundation.
The event also served as an inspiration for future adaptive cycling athletes. “She was such a bright presence, and I think she looked forward to every day,” Trautwein remarked.
For those wishing to contribute to the scholarship fund or learn more about the adaptive programs available, further information can be found on the foundation’s website.
