The San Juan Generating Station, located just west of Farmington, is taking significant strides toward ending its long-standing history of pollution in the Four Corners area.
Established in 1973, the plant supplied power to a variety of urban and rural electric organizations across New Mexico, Colorado, Utah, and even as far as California. However, despite its role in powering nearby communities, the plant was also a significant contributor to pollution, as noted by officials.
At its peak, the station emitted over 12 million tons of greenhouse gases annually into the atmosphere.
On Saturday morning, residents from the surrounding areas and clean energy advocates gathered to witness the dramatic demolition of four massive smokestacks at the plant. The event marks the beginning of a gradual shift from fossil fuels to renewable energy sources for electricity generation.
Community members are optimistic that the transition will not only lead to more sustainable energy production but also contribute to improving the overall health of those living nearby.
