A new report from Caputo and Van Der Walde—Injury & Accident Attorneys has identified the top 10 most dangerous states in America, with New Mexico leading the list. The report highlights alarming rates of firearm fatalities, assaults, and burglaries in these states.
New Mexico: A Concerning Leader
New Mexico stands out with the highest rates of various crimes, including:
- Burglaries: 603.93 incidents per 100,000 residents
- Firearm Mortality: 27.3 per 100,000, nearly double the national average
- Traffic Accidents: 8.91 per billion miles, significantly higher than the average of 5.37
- Homicides and Vehicle Thefts: Also reported at high rates
Other Dangerous States
The report lists the following states alongside New Mexico:
- Louisiana: High rates of traffic accidents and the second-highest assault offenses per 100,000 people at 502.31. A new law allows residents to conceal carry without a permit, impacting public safety perceptions.
- Arkansas: 10.24 homicides per 100,000 people in 2022, nearly double the national average.
- Alaska, Missouri, South Carolina, Tennessee, Nevada, Colorado, and Oklahoma: These states also reported high rates of various crimes and accidents.

Caputo and Van Der Walde evaluated the likelihood of residents becoming victims of crime, injury, or death across 10 metrics, including traffic fatalities and workplace injuries.
Public Safety Concerns
A spokesperson from Caputo and Van Der Walde emphasized the danger of living in states with high rates of violent crime, car accidents, and workplace incidents. They suggested that stricter traffic laws and public safety initiatives could help reduce these rates.
States Considering Reparations
Population Density and Crime
Alan Chang, a nationwide title & escrow expert, noted that higher crime rates often correlate with population density. “Population density is usually one of the precursors for a higher crime rate due to simple math,” Chang told Newsweek.
Safest States
In contrast, the least dangerous states were identified as:
- Rhode Island
- New Hampshire
- Massachusetts
- New Jersey
- Maine
These states have significantly lower crime rates, offering a safer living environment for their residents.
