Teen accused of shooting 6-year-old in the head; New Mexico mom tells his story
In January, a tragic event changed the life of 6-year-old Jason Acosta, who was shot by a 14-year-old boy in Hurley. After spending months in the hospital, Jason has returned home to a hero’s welcome in the Silver City area, with local fire departments and law enforcement providing a heartfelt escort.
“It’s been overwhelming. Jason went from being an active, playful child and a student to being bedridden and missing school since January,” said Maria Palomarez, Jason’s mother.
On January 12, Jason, his mother, brother, and stepfather were waiting in their car outside a family member’s home when a black Dodge truck arrived. According to New Mexico State Police, a 14-year-old boy emerged from the truck and fired multiple shots into the family’s vehicle, hitting Jason in the face.
The bullet struck Jason’s cheek, causing severe injuries: it damaged his eye, resulting in blindness in his right eye, broke his nose, and lodged in the left side of his brain. Due to its dangerous position, doctors have determined that removing the bullet could cause more harm.
The teenager fled the scene but was later apprehended by police. Authorities discovered a disassembled handgun and ammunition on him. He faces charges of attempted murder and tampering with evidence.
Palomarez expressed her desire for justice, saying, “The crime should match the punishment. My son fought for his life in the hospital for eight months.”
Jason has undergone more than a dozen surgeries and faces a lengthy recovery. The bullet’s impact on the left side of his brain has resulted in weakness on the right side of his body.
This week, Jason and his family were greeted with a warm and supportive homecoming. Local police and firefighters organized a parade through town, celebrating Jason’s return.
Despite the trauma, Palomarez noted that Jason remains cheerful and enjoys playing with his brother. The family is currently seeking donations to support Jason’s ongoing needs. For those interested in contributing, donations can be made through this link.
A plea hearing for the teenager, originally scheduled for June 24, has been rescheduled to August 19.
