TAKE ACTION: Americans to get one-time payment from $115m privacy settlement – Know Everthing

According to THE SUN, Americans have the opportunity to receive cash payments from a $115 million settlement involving Oracle, a cloud applications provider. This settlement addresses a privacy class action lawsuit alleging that Oracle illegally collected and sold personal information from the internet to third parties for advertising purposes.

Claims Against Oracle

The lawsuit claims that Oracle tracked various forms of personal information, including web activity, in-store purchases, and geolocation, without consumer consent. This information was allegedly sold to third parties for advertising uses. Oracle, which partners with companies like Uber, AMC, and MGM Resorts, has not admitted any wrongdoing but agreed to the settlement to resolve the claims.

Eligibility for Payments

The settlement benefits individuals whose personal information was collected by Oracle or made available through Oracle’s advertising products, including ID Graph and Data Marketplace, since August 19, 2018. Class members are entitled to an equal share of the net settlement fund, though the exact payment amount will depend on the number of claims filed and any fees deducted.

Settlement Terms and Company Changes

As part of the settlement, Oracle has agreed to cease capturing user-generated information from referrer websites and forms on its own website. The company will also implement an audit program to ensure compliance with privacy obligations.

Deadlines for Claims

Class members must submit a valid claim form by October 17, 2024, which is also the deadline for any exclusions or objections. The final approval hearing for the settlement is scheduled for November 14, 2024.

In addition to the Oracle settlement, other significant settlements include:

• Visa and Mastercard: Customers may receive payments from a $197.5 million settlement related to allegations that the companies charged unlawful surcharges on ATM transactions, including cash withdrawals. This settlement resolves claims of federal antitrust law violations.
