Suspect Dead After Police Shooting in Roswell

The Roswell Police Department reported that a suspect was fatally shot by police just after 3 p.m. on Tuesday. Officers attempted to arrest 28-year-old Louie Joseph Archuleta when he pulled into the parking lot of a hotel on Military Heights Dr. Archuleta, who was wanted on multiple charges, had been under police surveillance.

When officers approached, Archuleta fled in his vehicle, crashing into another car near the Eastern New Mexico Medical Center. He then fled on foot, and police noted he was seen holding a handgun both while driving and after he exited the vehicle.

During the foot chase, Roswell police stated, “Archuleta’s actions resulted in multiple officers firing shots.” He was struck by at least one bullet and was taken to the hospital, where he later died. Police did not provide further details about the events during the foot pursuit.

No officers were injured, and the driver of the other vehicle involved in the crash was also unharmed. New Mexico State Police are investigating the incident.
