A man and woman were fatally shot on Monday night in a residential area near Siringo Road and Camino Consuelo, and a suspect is now in custody. The victims, 19-year-old Abraham Dominic Romo and 23-year-old Ebony Faith Martinez, both from Santa Fe, were found with gunshot wounds in an SUV, according to the Santa Fe Police Department (SFPD).

The suspect, 23-year-old Manuel Joseph Martinez, has been arrested in connection with the murders. According to SFPD, officers responded to a noise complaint around 11 p.m. Monday, which led them to the scene of the crime. Upon arrival, police discovered a black Cadillac SUV that had veered off the road into an arroyo. They immediately encountered Martinez, who was covered in blood and holding a firearm.

Martinez dropped the weapon and initially attempted to flee but was apprehended by officers. Inside the vehicle, law enforcement found the bodies of Romo and Ebony Martinez, both of whom had sustained gunshot wounds.

This tragic double homicide follows a series of violent incidents in Santa Fe in recent months, including a fatal shooting during a robbery at a Best Buy parking lot in August and a shooting at a Sonic Drive-In in July. Santa Fe City Council members Jamie Cassutt and Amanda Chavez, whose districts have seen multiple homicides recently, are planning a community meeting to address public safety. Cassutt emphasized the need for more community engagement through initiatives like neighborhood watch groups and improvements to the city’s nuisance complaint process.

Cassutt also called for reforms at the state and federal levels, advocating for stronger gun laws to prevent those who shouldn’t have access to firearms from obtaining them. She plans to engage with state legislators ahead of the 2025 New Mexico Legislature session to discuss potential criminal justice reforms and gun legislation.

Manuel Joseph Martinez has a history of violent crimes and was out on personal recognizance after being arrested on Sept. 22 for charges of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and trafficking controlled substances. According to court documents, Martinez had previously threatened a Goodwill store worker with a replica handgun and was found in possession of six baggies of cocaine, which were believed to be intended for sale.

Martinez also has a history of domestic violence charges, including a December 2022 arrest for domestic abuse and a March 2023 arrest for strangling a woman. Both cases were dismissed without prejudice.

Now, Martinez faces two charges of first-degree murder, along with counts of tampering with evidence and resisting arrest. He was booked into the Santa Fe County Adult Detention Center on Tuesday.

Anyone with information or surveillance footage related to the shooting is encouraged to contact the Santa Fe Police Department at (505) 428-3710 or Detective Jairo DePaz at (505) 955-5297.
