According to The Sun, Aldi shoppers have recently come across orange barcode stickers on some merchandise, raising questions about their significance. The stickers, which cover the UPC barcode on items, have sparked curiosity among customers.
The Inquiry Begins
Aldi shopper Ty Avera took to Facebook to ask, “What does this sticker mean?” Avera included a picture showing the orange sticker on a container of mixed nuts, prompting several responses from fellow shoppers trying to decipher its purpose.
Conflicting Opinions on the Sticker’s Meaning
Responses varied widely, with some customers claiming that employees informed them the orange sticker indicates the item is on sale. One shopper commented, “We went through this yesterday! It was asked! It’s discounted.” Another inquired, “Is it marked down?”
However, not everyone agreed on its meaning. Some suggested that the sticker might cover an error or signal that the item should be processed differently at checkout.
“A lot of stores clearance things out that are getting close to their sell-by dates. So that orange sticker may mean to enter a price manually rather than scanning it since it’s over a barcode,” one commenter noted. Another added, “It’s meant to obscure the UPC code. Maybe it was printed incorrectly.”
An alleged Aldi employee also weighed in, stating, “Just a barcode misprint. We either put a sticker over them or sharpie them out.” Others speculated that the item might have been returned.
Seeking Clarity from Aldi
The U.S. Sun has reached out to Aldi for an official explanation regarding the purpose of the orange sticker. Aldi typically uses various labels to identify sales and other information for staff and customers.

A Look at Aldi’s Color-Coded Labels
While the orange stickers are new, Aldi has a history of using color-coded tags for different purposes. According to influencer and Aldi superfan Aldi Mamma, yellow tags are commonly seen for core merchandise, while green tags are used for produce. Additionally, Aldi has utilized white and red combination tags in recent years to identify limited-time offers.
Blue tags designate seasonal favorites, and solid red tags on meat indicate items that are nearing their expiration date.
Aldi’s Commitment to Low Prices
Aldi is well-known among shoppers for its competitive pricing. Earlier this summer, one shopper conducted a side-by-side comparison of grocery prices at Aldi and Walmart, discovering a savings of around $25 at Aldi.
In exciting news for customers, Aldi recently announced it would offer its “lowest-priced” Thanksgiving meal deal in five years, priced at just $47.
