The Stanford Cardinal may not have the “blue blood” status in college football, but they boast a rich history and strong traditions. However, recent games have raised concerns about the turnout for head coach Troy Taylor’s team.
On a hot day in California, the lack of fans in the stadium was hard to ignore. Sparse attendance and an abundance of Virginia Tech Hokies fans left many wondering what was happening with the Cardinal. In some areas of the stadium, it was easy to count the number of spectators, and many of them were sporting the opposing team’s colors.
One fan posted on X (formerly Twitter), “In Palo Alto at the Stanford football game. Half the stadium is empty. The other half are Hokie fans. The PA guy said ‘go,’ crowd supposed to say Stanford, but a loud ‘Hokies’ instead.”
Another user chimed in, “Ummmm. Just got back from a long drive, and #Stanford…do y’all not go to football games or what? That crowd is #Vandy pathetic.”
“This is the worst crowd ever in Stanford!” another fan lamented, adding the hashtag “#LetsGoHokies.”
“Nice Virginia Tech home crowd at Stanford today,” someone else commented, while another admitted, “This crowd at Stanford is sad.”
Adding to the disappointment, Stanford trailed 21-7 in the second half against a Virginia Tech team with a losing record. With just under 10 minutes left, the few students and parents in attendance tried to rally their team, but the atmosphere remained subdued.
