Spotting Sandhill Cranes in New Mexico: A Seasonal Tradition
The arrival of the Sandhill cranes marks the start of fall in New Mexico. Known for their distinctive calls, these majestic birds are a seasonal symbol across the state, especially at Bosque del Apache. The best time to witness the cranes is during sunrise or sunset, as they are busy foraging for food throughout the day.
According to wildlife experts, a large population of Sandhill cranes is a sign of a healthy ecosystem. “Sandhill cranes play a vital role in New Mexico. They offer excellent wildlife viewing opportunities, and during the winter months, about 80% of the Rocky Mountain population, which can number up to 20,000 cranes, migrates here to the middle Rio Grande Valley,” said Shayla March, a biologist with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.
The Bosque del Apache National Wildlife Refuge will host its annual Sandhill Crane Festival, beginning December 12, offering visitors a chance to experience these incredible birds up close.
