According to Marca, The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) in Texas provides vital assistance to low-income individuals and families, helping them afford food through monthly benefits. Here’s a breakdown of how the program works and who will receive their payments during the third week of October.

How SNAP Works

Administered by the Texas Health and Human Services Commission, SNAP beneficiaries receive an Electronic Benefit Transfer (EBT) card, known as the Lone Star Card. This card functions like a debit card, enabling recipients to purchase approved food items at participating grocery stores.

SNAP benefits can be used to buy a variety of essential food items, including:

  • Fruits and vegetables
  • Meat, poultry, and fish
  • Dairy products (like milk and cheese)
  • Staple foods (such as bread, cereal, rice, and pasta)
  • Seeds and plants that produce food (e.g., peas)

However, there are restrictions on what can be purchased with SNAP benefits. Items such as alcohol and tobacco products (including beer, wine, liquor, and cigarettes), non-food items (like pet food, cleaning supplies, and toiletries), vitamins, supplements, and hot or prepared food are not eligible for purchase.

Eligibility Criteria

Eligibility for SNAP benefits is based on several factors, including household income, size, and expenses. Generally, households must meet income guidelines of around 130% of the federal poverty level. Benefits are calculated according to household size and income, meaning larger households or those with lower incomes may receive more assistance, provided they meet other criteria such as age restrictions, physical mobility, and work hours.

Funds are deposited monthly onto the Lone Star Card for eligible recipients.

Payment Schedule for October

For the week of October 21-28, Texas SNAP beneficiaries can determine their payment dates based on their eligibility determination group (EDG) number. Here’s how it works:

  • EDG number: 72-74: Payment on October 21
  • EDG number: 75-78: Payment on October 22
  • EDG number: 79-81: Payment on October 23
  • EDG number: 82-85: Payment on October 24
  • EDG number: 86-88: Payment on October 25
  • EDG number: 89-92: Payment on October 26
  • EDG number: 93-95: Payment on October 27
  • EDG number: 96-99: Payment on October 28

To find your payment date, simply take the last two digits of your EDG number and match them with the corresponding date. This system ensures that all eligible Texans receive their much-needed food assistance in a timely manner.
