RECALL UPDATE: Potato Salad Recall Update as FDA Sets Highest Risk Level
According to News Week, The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has classified the risk level of a recently recalled potato salad product as Class I—the most severe category of risk. This classification indicates a significant health concern, as it denotes a situation where there is a reasonable probability that exposure to the violative product could lead to serious adverse health consequences or even death.
On September 11, Lemonland Food Corp voluntarily recalled a batch of its Potato Salad, which is packaged in plastic clamshell containers, due to the presence of undeclared soybean oil and egg. This poses a substantial risk to individuals with allergies or intolerances, as they rely on accurate ingredient labeling to avoid harmful products.
In an update issued on Wednesday, the FDA confirmed the severity of the situation. Undeclared ingredients can lead to dangerous reactions for those with specific food allergies. For instance, individuals allergic to soy may experience symptoms ranging from mild rashes and hives to severe anaphylaxis, which can be life-threatening. Symptoms of soy allergies can manifest immediately or be delayed for hours or even days. Similarly, egg allergies can lead to rashes, stomach pains, and, in rare cases, anaphylaxis.
Approximately 120 packages of the affected potato salad were distributed in Washington State, each weighing 0.56 pounds. The product, labeled under H-Mart, lists its ingredients as “Potato, Mayonnaise, Sugar, Vegetable,” with an expiry date of September 8 of this year.

In a related note, a cookies recall was also issued this September, classified as Class I due to undeclared allergens. Hawaii-based KTM Services recalled over 10,000 packages of Enjoy Premium Coconut Cookies after discovering the presence of milk, a major allergen that was not disclosed on the product label.
Newsweek has reached out to Lemonland Food Corp via email to inquire if any illnesses have been reported in connection with the potato salad recall.
