RECALL UPDATE: Pies Recalled in Washington and Oregon Over Allergy Fears
According to News Week, Grand Central Bakery, based in Portland, Oregon, has announced a recall of its frozen pie products and pie dough due to the presence of an undeclared egg allergen. The voluntary recall was issued on Friday and published on the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) website on Saturday.
Details of the Recall
The recall affects several products, including:

- U-Bake Apple Pie

These items may contain undeclared egg and were sold between August 1, 2024, and October 20, 2024. The expiration dates for the affected products range from February 1, 2025, to April 20, 2025. The pies are packaged in clear plastic with branded sticker labels that do not indicate the presence of egg.
Consumers can find the expiration date sticker on the exterior of the packaging.

Discovery and Company Statement
The undeclared egg was discovered by a Grand Central Bakery employee, who identified the allergen after the products had been distributed. In a statement to Newsweek, Chief Executive Claire Randall emphasized that the pie dough products made during the listed sales and expiration date range are safe for anyone without an egg allergy.
“The presence of egg does not affect the quality or taste,” she stated. “No illnesses have been reported, and the presence of egg is something we discovered through our own team. We are working closely with the FDA to follow their protocols.”
Allergen Information
Eggs are one of the nine major allergens recognized by the FDA, which also include wheat, milk, tree nuts, peanuts, soy, shellfish, fish, and sesame. People with egg allergies may experience reactions such as hives, vomiting, throat swelling, and difficulty breathing. In severe cases, reactions can escalate to anaphylaxis, a potentially fatal condition.
The FDA mandates strict labeling laws that require clear disclosure of any allergens present in food products.
