According to News Week, In a recent update, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has announced that the ongoing recall of pre-packaged muffins has been classified as a Class II recall. The recall was issued due to the presence of undeclared allergens, specifically whey (derived from milk) and wheat flour, which pose a health risk to individuals with allergies to these ingredients.
What is a Class II Recall?
The FDA defines a Class II recall as a situation in which the use of or exposure to a product could cause temporary or medically reversible health consequences. While the probability of serious adverse health consequences is remote, the presence of allergens like wheat and milk can still lead to potentially severe allergic reactions for some consumers.
Risks for Individuals with Wheat and Milk Allergies
According to the Food Allergy Research and Education (FARE) organization, allergic reactions to wheat can range from mild symptoms, such as hives, to severe conditions like anaphylaxis. Milk allergies can present similarly. FARE advises individuals with these allergies to carry an epinephrine delivery device, which is the first line of treatment for anaphylactic reactions.
Details of the Recalled Muffin Products
The recalled products are labeled as Whole Grains Bakery 6 oz. muffins in various flavors from Whole Grains Bon Croissant, distributed by The Posh Bakery, Inc., based in Sacramento, California. In total, 160 muffins have been recalled.
The affected products were distributed to local retail stores, including Walgreens. The FDA’s recall notice highlighted that these products contained undeclared whey (milk) and wheat flour, and lacked both a nutrition facts panel and a “contains” statement to warn consumers of allergens.
