RECALL UPDATE: Green Onions Recalled Due to Salmonella Fears

According to News Week, Green onions are being recalled after a product sample tested positive for salmonella, a bacterium that can lead to serious and potentially fatal infections in certain individuals. Church Brothers is voluntarily recalling 1,271 cases of green onions sold under the brands Church Brothers, Imperial Fresh, and Trader Joe’s due to concerns about contamination.

Recall Details

The contamination was identified by the Canadian Food Inspection Agency and subsequently reported to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), which announced the recall on Friday, October 18. The affected products were distributed to stores and food-service customers in Canada and 11 U.S. states, including Alabama, California, Connecticut, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, New York, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, and Virginia.

Health Risks

Salmonella can pose serious health risks, especially to young children, elderly adults, and individuals with weakened immune systems. Symptoms of food poisoning from salmonella may include fever, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain. While no illnesses related to this recall have been reported to Church Brothers Farms, the FDA has confirmed that the company is working with customers to ensure prompt compliance with the recall.

Consumer Advice

Consumers who find recalled green onions in their kitchens are advised to discard them immediately and avoid consumption. The affected products feature the lot code CB272378 on the front of the clear plastic bag packaging for Church Brothers and Imperial Fresh brands. For the Trader Joe’s packaging, the same lot code can be found on the back of the packet, along with the pack date of 092524.
