Reason for Recall

The recall was initiated following a routine test conducted at TreeHouse Foods’ manufacturing facility, which detected potential contamination. Listeria monocytogenes is known to cause a serious infection called listeriosis, which can be particularly dangerous for vulnerable populations.

Health Risks Associated with Listeria

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), listeria infection is the third leading cause of death from foodborne illness in the U.S., resulting in approximately 1,600 infections and 260 deaths annually. The FDA notes that Listeria monocytogenes poses a heightened risk to young children, frail or elderly individuals, and those with weakened immune systems. Healthy individuals may experience short-term symptoms such as high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain, and diarrhea.

One of the concerning aspects of Listeria monocytogenes is its ability to grow in colder temperatures, including those found in refrigerators, which complicates its control compared to other bacteria.

Vulnerable Populations

Particularly at risk are pregnant women, newborns, the elderly, and individuals with weakened immune systems. Severe cases of listeriosis can lead to serious complications, including meningitis and encephalitis. The FDA warns that listeria infections can also cause miscarriages and stillbirths in pregnant women.

For consumers who have purchased these products, it is crucial to check their freezers and take the necessary precautions.
