RECALL UPDATE: Cookies Recall Update as FDA Sets Highest Risk Level
According to News Week, More than 10,000 packages of cookies have been recalled after the presence of an undeclared allergen was discovered. In September, Hawaii-based KTM Services initiated a recall of its Enjoy Premium Coconut Cookies, available in 5.3-ounce and 17.7-ounce packages. The recall was prompted by the detection of milk, a major allergen, that was not disclosed on the product label. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has classified this recall as a Class I, the highest risk level.
Understanding Class I Recalls
A Class I recall is issued when there is a “reasonable probability” that the use of or exposure to a product could lead to “serious adverse health consequences or death.” The FDA has indicated that the affected cookie products have best-by dates ranging from September 12, 2024, to August 8, 2024. These cookies were sold in retail stores across Hawaii, Guam, and Las Vegas, Nevada, as well as through online platforms.
Details of the Recall
In total, the recall affects 9,734 units of the 5.3-ounce Coconut Cookies and 1,275 packages of the 17.7-ounce Coconut Cookies. As of now, Newsweek has reached out to KTM Services via email for comment outside of normal working hours.
The Importance of Allergen Declarations
Milk is one of nine major allergens identified by the FDA, which also includes soybeans, eggs, fish, crustacean shellfish, tree nuts, peanuts, wheat, and sesame. The FDA mandates that these allergens must be declared on all food packaging. The agency warns that consumption by individuals with allergies can result in serious or life-threatening reactions.
Potential Health Risks
Food allergy reactions can manifest in various ways, including hives, rashes, swelling, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal cramping, and coughing or wheezing. More severe reactions, known as anaphylaxis, can cause swelling of the throat, difficulty breathing, and loss of consciousness. The FDA emphasizes that symptoms of anaphylaxis may begin mildly but can escalate to life-threatening levels without prompt treatment.
Anyone experiencing a serious allergic reaction is advised to seek immediate medical attention or call 911.
No Reported Illnesses Linked to the Recall
According to the FDA’s original recall announcement issued on September 19, no illnesses have been reported in connection with the KTM Services product.
What to Do If You Experience Allergic Reactions
If you experience symptoms from an undeclared allergen, Dr. Darin Detwiler, a professor of food policy and corporate social responsibility at Northeastern University, recommends the following steps:
“First and foremost, seek medical assistance to address your symptoms and ensure your safety.” Additionally, it’s crucial to notify the FDA and local health departments about your illness or allergic reaction to help prevent others from becoming ill.
Dr. Detwiler also advises retaining the packaging and any remaining product, as this could be important for investigations and potential legal actions.
