RECALL UPDATE: Cheese Recall Update as Aldi and Other Products Could Be Unsafe
According to Newsweek , Savencia Cheese USA has expanded its recall to include Glenview Farms Spreadable Brie after routine testing revealed potential listeria contamination in processing equipment used at their Lena, Illinois facility. This brings the total number of recalled soft cheese products to seven.
The voluntary recall, announced on Tuesday, affects select soft-ripened cheeses distributed to a limited number of retailers across 12 states: California, Colorado, Connecticut, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Massachusetts, Missouri, New Jersey, Oregon, Texas, and Washington. Savencia confirmed that no finished products have tested positive for contamination, but they are acting with caution to retrieve any potentially affected items.
Listeria monocytogenes, the bacteria involved, can cause serious infections, particularly in young children, the elderly, pregnant women, and people with weakened immune systems. In pregnant women, it can lead to stillbirths or infections in newborns. Symptoms of listeriosis can resemble food poisoning, with fever, headache, nausea, abdominal pain, and diarrhea. According to the CDC, listeria is one of the leading causes of foodborne illness deaths in the U.S., affecting around 1,600 people and resulting in approximately 260 fatalities each year.

The cheeses now included in the recall are:
- Aldi Emporium Selection Brie
- La Bonne Vie Brie
- La Bonne Vie Camembert
- Industrial Brie
- Market Basket Brie
- Supreme Oval
- Glenview Farms Spreadable Brie, with a best-by date of January 13, 2025
The FDA has reposted Savencia’s recall notice as a public service, although the recall was company-initiated. Consumers who purchased any of these products are advised to return them to their place of purchase for a refund.
