According to THE SUN, TaxAct, a popular tax filing service, will pay $14.95 million to users as part of a class action settlement over privacy violations. The lawsuit alleges that TaxAct shared user information with third parties, including Meta and Google, in violation of federal and state privacy laws.
TaxAct has denied any wrongdoing but has agreed to the settlement to resolve the claims.
Eligibility and Payments
To be eligible for a share of the settlement, clients must have used TaxAct between January 1, 2018, and December 31, 2022. If your spouse filed a joint return on your behalf, you may also qualify.
Most users are expected to receive payouts of approximately $18.65. However, California residents may be entitled to additional benefits due to state privacy laws.
In addition to monetary compensation, class members will receive a free TaxAct service for tax year 2024. Claims must be filed by September 11, either online or by mail. Note that individuals who previously filed an arbitration demand with TaxAct are excluded from this settlement.
