Project 2025: What is it? What impact does it have on New Mexico?

“This is not what the founding fathers had in mind for this country,” said Democratic Rep. Melanie Stansbury, describing her concerns about Project 2025.

She views the project as a deceptive initiative, suggesting that if Trump wins the presidential election, it could grant his administration unprecedented control over the federal government.

“It essentially outlines a detailed plan, identifying each action they want to take—from firing federal officials to closing programs, relocating offices, and fundamentally dismantling the federal government,” Stansbury said.

The 920-page agenda, created by the Heritage Foundation, claims to aim for the restoration of “American prosperity.” It includes recommendations to dismantle the Department of Homeland Security, the Department of Education, the Federal Emergency Management Agency, and more. Experts warn that if any of these suggestions are implemented, they could have significant implications across the state.

“Federal government agencies play a crucial role here in New Mexico,” said KOAT Political Expert Brian Sanderoff. “The Department of Defense, the Department of the Interior, the Department of Energy—these are substantial agencies with a significant impact in New Mexico.”

Steve Pearce, the Republican Party of New Mexico Chairman, asserted that Trump is not directly connected to Project 2025 but added, “New Mexicans know Trump strengthened the country, improved their lives, and expanded freedom by curbing bureaucrats.”

Economic experts are concerned that the implementation of this plan could drastically alter New Mexico’s economy.

“Over 6% of our economy is driven by R&D, primarily funded through government sources,” explained UNM Economist Reilly White. “It’s uncertain how these government cuts would affect New Mexico given our state’s reliance on these resources.”

The plan also suggests increasing presidential control over the Department of Justice.

Tonight, both the Democratic Party of New Mexico and other state Republicans will share their thoughts on this plan. Tune in at 9 p.m. on KOAT for more.
