A Bay Area man and his mother are in custody following the fatal shooting of a custodian at a Daly City gym last week. The San Mateo County District Attorney’s Office reported that the victim was targeted after confronting the alleged shooter about locker room rules at the gym.
The incident occurred shortly after 7 p.m. on September 29, when Daly City police received a report of a shooting on the 1300 block of South Mayfair Avenue. Upon arriving at the scene, officers discovered 60-year-old Rolando Viray Yanga dead from multiple gunshot wounds. Yanga had just left the Daly City Fitness 19 gym, where he worked, when he was followed and shot by 21-year-old Maarij Abdullah Afridi, according to San Mateo County District Attorney Steve Wagstaffe.
Wagstaffe explained that Afridi had a history of problematic behavior at the gym, including walking around barefoot and causing disruptions in the locker room. Yanga had spoken to Afridi about following the gym’s rules, which led to Afridi’s decision to kill him, Wagstaffe said.
“This confrontation was over cleanliness at the gym,” Wagstaffe told KTVU.
Surveillance footage helped investigators track the vehicle that followed Yanga from the gym. The day after the shooting, Daly City police arrested Afridi and his mother, 50-year-old Zaib Un Nisa Afridi. Both are being held without bail on murder charges, and they are due in court on October 9. According to Wagstaffe, Zaib Afridi drove the vehicle and is considered an accomplice in the crime.
Authorities are urging anyone with information about the incident to contact the Daly City police at 650-991-8270.
