According to THE SUN, BuzzFeed has agreed to pay $9 million to settle a class action lawsuit that alleged the company violated privacy laws. Although BuzzFeed has denied any wrongdoing, the settlement resolves claims that it improperly shared user information with Facebook, in violation of the federal Video Privacy Protection Act.

Settlement Details

The settlement benefits BuzzFeed account holders and digital newsletter subscribers who accessed a video through a BuzzFeed website between May 16, 2021, and November 10, 2023. This includes sites such as HuffPost, Tasty, and Complex.

Class members will receive up to $8 in cash and a free one-year subscription to BuzzFeed+, valued at over $35.

Nevada Restaurant Services Data Breach Settlement

Nevada Restaurant Services, which operates several casinos, gambling parlors, and resorts including Dotty’s, has reached a settlement following a significant data breach. The lawsuit alleged that the company failed to implement adequate cybersecurity measures, leading to a 2021 breach that compromised sensitive information such as bank account and Social Security numbers.

While Nevada Restaurant Services denies any wrongdoing, it has agreed to an undisclosed settlement amount to mitigate further legal expenses.

Affected individuals should have received a notification from the company. To file a claim, class members will need the claim ID sent to them via mail or email. No documentation is required to file a claim, but providing proof could increase the payout.

Class members are eligible for reimbursement up to $350 for losses such as credit expenses, communication charges, and lost time, with an additional $35 per hour of time lost. Those who experienced fraud or identity theft can claim up to $10,000, depending on their losses. Without proof, claimants will receive a $50 payment.

The deadline to file a claim is September 17, 2024.
