“NMSU to Host STEM Education Conference in October: Submit Abstracts by Sept. 27”

LAS CRUCES, N.M. – The STEM+ Education and Research Institute (SERI) at New Mexico State University (NMSU) will host a statewide conference aimed at connecting K-12 educators and STEM education researchers from across New Mexico. The 2024 SERI Conference, titled “Translating Research to Practice – Elevating STEM Education in New Mexico,” will take place on Oct. 30 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Las Cruces Convention Center, 680 E. University Ave. While there is no cost to attend, online registration is required.

“We are excited to host the second annual SERI Conference,” said Susan Brown, interim director of SERI. “With a focus on translating research into practice, we are inviting educators to share best practices and explore new strategies to elevate both teaching and research in STEM education.”

Featured Speakers and Presentations

The conference will feature a keynote address from John Garcia, senior adviser for the U.S. Department of Education. Garcia brings extensive experience from roles such as deputy of Strategic Partnerships and Innovation for the Los Angeles County Office of Education and senior program officer for education at the California Community Foundation. His background also includes serving as a consultant for the National Governors Association and Jobs for the Future, among other prominent organizations.

  • Gwen Warniment, President and CEO of the Los Alamos National Laboratory Foundation
  • Sara Brownell, STEM professor at Arizona State University
  • Danielle Maxwell, STEM professor at the University of Detroit

Call for Submissions

NMSU is currently accepting abstract submissions from university STEM faculty, staff, graduate students, as well as K-12 administrators and teachers, until Sept. 27. Submissions will be considered for poster presentations or microbrew sharing sessions. For inquiries, participants can contact Susan Brown at susanbro@nmsu.edu.

This conference serves as an opportunity for educators and researchers to engage in valuable discussions, share evidence-based practices, and foster collaboration to advance STEM education across New Mexico.
