NMED’s New Program Offers Assistance for Failing Septic Systems
The New Mexico Environment Department (NMED) has announced a new initiative aimed at helping low-income homeowners address failing septic systems. The newly launched Liquid Waste Assistance Fund is providing $200,000 to support the repair and replacement of 12 septic systems across the state. Homeowners interested in applying for this assistance have until October 2 at 5 p.m. to submit their applications.
Addressing Environmental and Health Concerns
Aging septic systems can pose significant risks to both public health and the environment. The Liquid Waste Assistance Fund is designed to mitigate these risks by offering financial support to replace malfunctioning systems and, if necessary, cover the costs associated with connecting to a central sewer system.
NMED will review applications on a first-come, first-served basis and will evaluate them to ensure that repairs are essential. All funding decisions are expected to be finalized by November.
Eligibility Requirements
To qualify for the assistance, applicants must meet the following criteria:
- Own or be in the process of purchasing the property where repairs will be made and have resided there for the past year.
- The property’s value, as assessed by the county assessor, must not exceed the U.S. Housing and Urban Development (HUD) median home value for their county.
- Meet income guidelines based on HUD standards, which vary by county.
Applications can be submitted online or in person at a NMED field office.
