New Mexico Weather Update: Isolated Showers and Cooling Temperatures

New Mexico is in for another round of showers and storms today. This afternoon and into the early evening, isolated storms are expected to develop across southern, central, northern, and western parts of the state. The heaviest rainfall is anticipated in the mountainous areas, prompting the National Weather Service to issue Flood Watches for the Sangre de Cristo and Sacramento Mountains regions. These watches include areas affected by the Hermits Peak Calf Canyon and Ruidoso burn scars, where flash flooding is a possibility. The watches will remain in effect until the evening of August 27th.

Temperatures across New Mexico are continuing to cool down. Albuquerque recorded its first high in the 80s, while Roswell has finally ended its streak of 100+ degree days. The rain expected throughout the week will help maintain these cooler temperatures.

Starting tonight, more monsoon moisture will be drawn into the state, fueling rain chances over the next few days. By the end of the week, a backdoor cold front is expected to move into New Mexico, bringing additional moisture to the eastern and southeastern regions. As this front moves in, rain chances will shift slightly further east.
