New Mexico Weather: Gusty Winds and Dry Storms with Cooler Temps Coming Soon
Albuquerque, NM – Central and eastern New Mexico are bracing for gusty winds and dry thunderstorms today, with elevated fire risks continuing through the weekend. Temperatures are expected to remain 5–10 degrees above average, with many areas reaching the mid-90s. These hazardous conditions will persist until Saturday, making outdoor activities particularly risky.
The National Weather Service has warned of wind gusts up to 60 mph, especially during the afternoon and evening. Although thunderstorms are expected, they will bring little to no rainfall. Instead, virga showers—rain that evaporates before hitting the ground—are likely to dominate the region. The combination of high winds and dry air significantly increases the likelihood of fast-spreading wildfires.
Residents are urged to secure outdoor items and avoid open flames or outdoor burning. The heightened fire risk is expected to ease once temperatures cool and rain becomes more likely on Sunday.
