Starting in 2025, New Mexicans will have access to a new, free option for filing their federal taxes. The state has joined the Internal Revenue Service’s (IRS) Direct File program, which will enable many taxpayers to file their federal returns online at no cost. Approximately 200,000 residents of New Mexico are expected to benefit from this free filing service for the upcoming tax season.

The New Mexico Taxation and Revenue Department will collaborate with the IRS over the coming months to ensure the program is ready for the 2024 tax year, with returns due in April 2025. “We are thrilled to partner with the IRS to provide taxpayers with this valuable new tool for next year’s filing season,” said Taxation and Revenue Secretary Stephanie Schardin Clarke in a statement.

New Mexico is the fourth state to join the Direct File initiative, following Oregon, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania, which also announced their participation this summer.
