New Mexico Reports Decrease in Suicide Rates for Women and Indigenous Groups
Recent data from the New Mexico Department of Health’s Center for Health Protection reveals a positive trend in the state’s suicide death rates, particularly among women and Indigenous populations.
The number of women who died by suicide in New Mexico dropped significantly by more than 40%, from 116 deaths in 2022 to 67 in 2023. Similarly, suicide deaths among American Indian and Alaska Native residents fell by 43%, from 77 deaths in 2022 to 44 in 2023. In total, the state’s overall suicide death rate decreased by 9% in 2023.
