New Mexico Nonprofit Receives $100,000 Grant to Build Largest Permanent Labyrinth in U.S.
According to source A New Mexico-based nonprofit is set to receive nearly $100,000 from the state to create the largest permanent labyrinth in the United States. This project, state officials say, will provide a significant boost to the local economy.
Cancer Awareness, Prevalence, Prevention and Early Detection (CAPPED, Inc.), based in Otero County, has been awarded $99,999 from the Trails+ Grant program. This funding, administered by the Outdoor Recreation Division of the New Mexico Economic Development Department (EDD), will help complete the Trinity Turtle Healing Labyrinth Phase III.
The labyrinth will cover 40,000 square feet, be ADA-accessible, and function as both an open-air theater and a learning center. It was one of 17 projects selected for grant funding from a total of approximately $3.2 million.
EDD Acting Cabinet Secretary Mark Roper highlighted the economic benefits of the Trails+ Grant program, noting its role in job creation and community growth, particularly in Tribal and rural areas. “The Trails+ Grant is giving a significant boost to the state’s economy and supporting the growth of local communities,” Roper said.
However, the department did not provide specific details on how this grant would directly impact state economic growth.
Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham established the Outdoor Recreation Trails+ Grant Program in 2019 to enhance outdoor recreational facilities across the state. The program supports improvements to trail systems, accessible outdoor spaces, wildlife viewing areas, and signage.
ORD Outdoor Recreation Planner Carl Colonius emphasized the program’s benefits: “Strategic investments improve the quality of life for residents across New Mexico by stimulating regional economic development and increasing access to beautiful places like Las Maravillas Park in Valencia County and the cross-country ski trails outside of Los Alamos.”
Looking ahead, New Mexico will allocate over $11 million in Trails+ Grants for Fiscal Year 2025. The first round of applications is due by September 30, 2024. For more information about the grant program, visit NMOutside.com.
