New Mexico Launches Justice Re-Entry Program to Connect Released Inmates with Healthcare Services
New Mexico residents transitioning out of prison will now find it easier to access healthcare, thanks to a new initiative supported by the New Mexico Health Care Authority (HCA). The New Mexico Justice Re-Entry Program aims to connect Medicaid-eligible inmates with essential healthcare services prior to their release. This initiative seeks to reduce emergency department visits, overdose-related deaths, and inpatient hospitalizations, according to a statement from HCA.
“When individuals leave prison or jail with an established, trusted healthcare connection, they are more likely to continue medications, adhere to treatment plans, and seek new services,” said Dana Flannery, the Medicaid Director. “We believe this will make a meaningful difference in helping people successfully reintegrate into their communities.”
HCA described the program as an “exciting development” that will positively impact the health outcomes of formerly incarcerated individuals as they transition back into society.
To ensure effective implementation, HCA is currently hosting online meetings to educate state, county, and local jails and prisons, as well as healthcare providers, about the program. These sessions also aim to engage stakeholders in shaping the program’s design and execution.
