New Mexico Launches Campaign to Attract Texas Healthcare Professionals

New Mexico is actively working to recruit healthcare professionals from Texas through its “Free to Provide” campaign, investing $400,000 over four weeks. This initiative features billboards in the Houston Medical Center and full-page advertisements in major newspapers across Dallas, Fort Worth, Houston, San Antonio, and Austin.

While the campaign is influenced by the political landscape, New Mexico’s Secretary of Health, Patrick Allen, emphasizes that the primary goal is to address the state’s significant shortage of healthcare providers. “We’re a state that needs more of everything, everywhere in terms of providers. We’re trying to make a pitch to Texas providers that they won’t need to worry about legal repercussions affecting their medical judgment,” Allen said on Inside Texas Politics.

Currently, the campaign is targeted at Texas, but if it proves successful, Allen suggests it could be extended or expanded to other states.

Since the passing of Texas’s “heartbeat bill,” which bans most abortions, and the U.S. Supreme Court’s Dobbs decision, New Mexico has seen a notable increase in services provided to Texans. According to Allen, New Mexico now handles approximately 14,000 abortions annually for Texans, alongside a rise in gender-affirming care and other reproductive healthcare services.

Allen highlighted that one critical area of concern is miscarriage care, which often requires urgent attention and is not something people typically plan for or travel long distances to receive.
