New Mexico Heatwave Alert: Record Highs Expected This Week
New Mexico is preparing for an extended heatwave, with temperatures projected to challenge or surpass record highs throughout the week. The National Weather Service in Albuquerque has issued a warning for near-record heat, particularly impacting the southern, central, and eastern parts of the state. Daily temperatures are expected to rise well above 100 degrees, with some areas possibly exceeding 102 degrees.
The National Weather Service reports that shower and thunderstorm activity will decrease slightly on Sunday and Monday. However, rain chances will increase from Tuesday through Friday as moisture returns to the region. Despite the rain potential, temperatures will remain elevated, with dry air moving in from the west by Saturday.
Residents are advised to take precautions against heat-related illnesses by staying hydrated, seeking shade, and avoiding strenuous outdoor activities during the hottest parts of the day. Additionally, the National Weather Service has stressed the dangers of leaving children or pets in vehicles, where temperatures can quickly become fatal.
