“New Mexico Governor Takes Action on Arsenic Water Crisis, Promises Accountability”
For several months, KFOX14 has been reporting on the ongoing water quality issues affecting Sunland Park and Santa Teresa communities. Tests have revealed that arsenic levels in the drinking water supplied by the Camino Real Regional Utility Authority have been problematic for years. Although steps are being taken to address these issues, residents in both communities have faced significant challenges due to the contaminated water supply.
Governor Michelle Lujan-Grisham recently spoke with KFOX14 about the state’s response to this situation. She acknowledged receiving numerous complaints from residents concerned about their drinking water quality.
“There was a point when the arsenic filters were no longer used. We need to understand who made that decision and why,” Lujan-Grisham said. She emphasized that while this matter should have been handled locally, the scale of the problem has necessitated state intervention.
The Governor outlined steps being taken to resolve the crisis, including the construction of a new tank to better control water quality. She also mentioned that water from at least four different sites is currently being tested to ensure it meets safety standards.
“Today, I’m confident that the water is safe,” Lujan-Grisham assured. “We are rigorously testing to confirm that there are no dangerous levels of arsenic. The environmental department is actively involved in ensuring the safety of our water supply.”
Despite the challenges, Lujan-Grisham remains committed to resolving the issue and ensuring that residents have access to safe drinking water.
