“New Mexico Expands SNAP Benefits and Eligibility Requirements in 2024”
Starting October 1, 2024, many New Mexicans who qualify for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) will see an increase in their benefits. The state announced additional changes to the program this week, including expanded eligibility and longer certification periods.
“This increase is significant for many families,” said Cody Jeff, Benefits Attorney for the New Mexico Center on Law & Poverty. “It could mean the difference between having enough food for the rest of the week.”
SNAP recipients who are 60 years or older, as well as those with disabilities, will receive an increase in their state supplement. The minimum benefit for this group will rise from $32 to $100 per month, benefiting over 26,451 households, according to the state’s Health Care Authority.
“This change will be especially impactful for our elderly population and individuals with disabilities, as they often rely on fixed incomes,” said Niki Kozlowski, Director of the Income Support Division at New Mexico’s Health Care Authority.
Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham expressed her support for these changes, stating, “No New Mexican should ever have to go hungry. By expanding SNAP access and increasing benefits, we’re ensuring more families, seniors, and individuals with disabilities receive the support they need to live with dignity and security. These changes are part of our ongoing efforts to reduce hunger and improve the well-being of our communities.”
Additional Changes to SNAP:
- The certification period for SNAP benefits will be extended from 12 months to up to 36 months for recipients aged 60 or older and for those with disabilities who do not have earned income.
- SNAP eligibility guidelines will be adjusted, increasing from 165% to 200% of the federal poverty limit. This change will enable approximately 67,697 additional New Mexican households to qualify for essential food assistance.
“We’re thrilled that New Mexico is moving forward with these SNAP expansions,” Jeff added. “These changes will help more New Mexicans access the support they need.”
