According to Countryherald New Mexico is preparing for a significant heatwave, with temperatures expected to remain uncomfortably high throughout the week. Forecasts predict that Sunday afternoon will see temperatures reach 95 degrees in Albuquerque, with similar highs across the state.
The US National Weather Service in Albuquerque warns that the heat risk will increase starting Monday, with many areas experiencing temperatures in the high 90s to low 100s. Cities such as Clayton and Tucumcari could see highs ranging from 100 to 103 degrees. Santa Fe is expected to reach temperatures between 91 and 97 degrees, while Roswell may experience highs up to 101 degrees.
This extreme heat presents serious health risks, particularly for those without proper cooling or hydration. The National Weather Service has issued a heat risk warning, advising residents to stay indoors during peak heat hours, drink plenty of water, and avoid strenuous activities.
Precipitation chances are expected to remain low for most of the week, worsening existing dry conditions. There are slight chances of rain by Thursday and Friday, with a 20-30% chance in Albuquerque and surrounding areas.
The high temperatures are forecasted to persist into next weekend, with Albuquerque experiencing highs around 94 to 97 degrees. This prolonged heatwave is unusual for the region, underscoring the importance of taking safety precautions.
