OFF THE RACK: TJ Maxx rival announces it’s closing city’s only location forcing shoppers to travel by car or boat to nearest store
According to THE SUN, A popular department store chain and competitor to TJ Maxx is set to close its only location in Staten Island in the coming months, leaving shoppers with limited options.
Closure Details
The Nordstrom Rack store, located at 15 Richmond Terrace in Empire Outlets, will officially close its doors on December 4, 2024. The decision comes as the store’s lease is set to expire, according to a notice from the New York State Department of Labor. The closure will affect 24 employees, who were notified on September 6.
As the Staten Island store shuts down, local shoppers will have to travel by car or take a boat to reach the nearest Nordstrom and Nordstrom Rack locations. In New York, there are 13 other Nordstrom locations, including four in New York City and two in White Plains.
Store Closure Trend
Nordstrom, a luxury department store chain with over 350 Nordstrom and Nordstrom Rack stores across the U.S., has been closing several locations in recent years. Last year, the retailer shut down 15 stores across the U.S. and Canada, including eight Nordstrom Rack locations, between June and August. This included significant closures in the Canadian market, affecting several locations in Calgary, Edmonton, Langley, Ottawa, and Toronto.
In addition to the Canadian closures, Nordstrom also shuttered two locations in San Francisco, California, due to expired leases. The Nordstrom Rack on Market Street closed on July 1, while the Nordstrom store at Westfield Mall closed at the end of August.
Recent Closures in New York
This year, Nordstrom has also closed two locations in Brooklyn, New York. The Nordstrom Rack on Fulton Street in Downtown Brooklyn was scheduled to close on February 3, and the store at Gateway Center Mall shut its doors on August 31.
Wider Retail Landscape
The trend of store closures is not unique to Nordstrom. Big Lots recently filed for bankruptcy after weeks of speculation and announced plans to close 545 locations. Similarly, bankrupt LL Flooring will close 200 stores, even after receiving a last-minute rescue. As the retail landscape continues to shift, shoppers may find themselves facing fewer choices as more retailers shut down locations across the country.
