Thunderstorms and Flash Floods
New Mexico’s sunny climate can quickly turn hazardous with severe thunderstorms. These storms, which affect all counties in the state, are known for producing strong winds, large hail, heavy rain, and dangerous lightning strikes. Thunderstorms are most common in eastern New Mexico from April to June and throughout the rest of the state from July to August.
These storms often lead to flash flooding, a serious hazard that can damage structures, harm people, and impact the environment. Flash floods are particularly dangerous in areas affected by wildfires, such as the burn scars from the Hermit’s Peak/Calf Canyon and South Fork/Salt fires.
Tornadoes
While New Mexico experiences tornadoes, they are generally weak and short-lived, occurring about 10 times a year across various counties. Tornadoes are most frequent in eastern New Mexico from April to July during the thunderstorm season. Landspouts, which are less intense than traditional tornadoes and can form without strong thunderstorms, are more common in the state.
Earthquakes
New Mexico is subject to earthquakes from both natural and human causes. While the state doesn’t experience major quakes, smaller ones are relatively common. Human activities such as mining, fracking, and weapon testing can induce seismic activity. Natural causes include fault lines and volcanic activity, particularly around the Rio Grande Rift and near Socorro, where magma activity can lead to smaller tremors.
Wildfires
Wildfires are a significant concern in New Mexico, driven by drought, strong winds, and dry vegetation. Since 2000, more than 7 million acres have been scorched by fires in the state. These fires are often caused by human activity or lightning and can range from minor blazes to massive conflagrations consuming thousands of acres. The combination of dry conditions and strong winds exacerbates the spread of wildfires, making them a constant threat in the region.
