
Officials in Siskiyou County, Northern California, have detained a 22-year-old man who allegedly accidentally shot and killed his mother with a stolen rifle.
The tragic incident occurred on the afternoon of October 2, when deputies from the Siskiyou County Sheriff’s Office were called to a residence in the small community of Dorris, near the Oregon border, roughly 280 miles north of Sacramento. Upon arrival, authorities found 55-year-old Mary Loretta Curtz, who had sustained a fatal gunshot wound.
While deputies were still at the scene, the suspect contacted emergency services and admitted to accidentally shooting his mother with a stolen rifle. Emergency dispatchers kept the man on the phone and convinced him to surrender to California Highway Patrol officers.
The man was taken into custody and transported to the Siskiyou County Jail.
