MONEY MOVES: Americans can score $500 monthly payments in free money from ‘breathe’ program – and there are no strings attached
According to THE SUN, A Universal Basic Income (UBI) program is expanding to provide monthly payments for over a year. The Breathe program, initially launched with 1,000 participants receiving $1,000 monthly for three years, is now set to include an additional 2,000 residents in Los Angeles County.
The expansion will specifically benefit foster youth aged 18 to 21, who will receive $500 monthly payments for up to 18 months. This extension aims to support these young adults as they transition out of the foster care system. Participants will be notified by their social workers from the Department of Children and Family Services.
The Breathe program offers cash support with no strings attached, allowing recipients to spend the money as they see fit without any repayment requirements. The initiative was designed to help residents achieve greater financial stability and reduce economic stress.
According to data from the University of Pennsylvania’s Center for Guaranteed Income Research, the original program significantly aided participants in achieving financial stability. The additional income was primarily used for food, groceries, and household goods.
“When we started Breathe, our goal was to provide no-strings-attached funding to give real economic liberty to Angelenos,” said Los Angeles County Supervisor Holly J. Mitchell. “We’ve seen families use this support for childcare, rent, and savings. I’m proud of this second expansion, which will support young people during the crucial transition from foster care.”
Over the past three years, the Breathe program has invested $3.4 million into the community.
Additional UBI Opportunities in California
California offers several other UBI programs administered by cities and counties. In Pomona, approximately 30 miles from Los Angeles, the Household Universal Grants Pilot Program (Pomona HUG) provides $500 monthly payments for 18 months to 250 selected participants. A control group of 350 people receives $20 monthly for the same period. Both groups can earn $50 bonus payments by completing program surveys, which UCLA will study to assess the impact of the payments.
